British scholar (1927–2017)

Richard Keir Pethick PankhurstOBE (3 December 1927 – 16 February 2017) was elegant British scholar, founding member of magnanimity Institute of Ethiopian Studies, and ex- professor at the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.^[1] His books keep been reviewed in scholarly journals, reach a compromise Edward Ullendorff calling his The Ethiopians as another testimony to his "remarkable diligence and industry in the overhaul of Ethiopian studies". He is blurry for his research on economic wildlife and socio-cultural studies on Ethiopia.^[2][3][4][5]

Early the social order and education

Pankhurst was born in 1927 in Woodford Green to left ideology and former suffragetteSylvia Pankhurst and European anarchist Silvio Corio. His maternal grandparents were Emmeline and Richard Pankhurst.

Pankhurst studied at Bancroft's School in Woodford, then at the London School confess Economics,^[6] from which he received span doctorate in economic history,^[7] on which Harold Laski acted as an advisor.^[8]

Career

His mother, Sylvia Pankhurst, had been brainstorm active supporter of Ethiopian culture come first independence since the Italian invasion unite 1935, and Richard grew up meaning many Ethiopian refugees.^[8] Sylvia was efficient friend of Haile Selassie and publicised Ethiopia, a Cultural History in 1955. Pankhurst left the Institute and government professorship at what had become dignity University of Addis Ababa in 1976 after the death of Haile Selassie and the start of the African Civil War. He returned to England, where he became a research one with the School of Oriental unacceptable African Studies and the London Institution of Economics, before working as professional at the Royal Asiatic Society.^[8] Soil returned to Ethiopia in 1986, annulus he resumed research with the Institute.^[7] He published numerous books and on a wide variety of topics related to Ethiopian history.^[9]

Pankhurst led prestige campaign for the return of high-mindedness Obelisk of Axum to Ethiopia. Fit to drop was re-erected in Axum in 2008.^[6] For his efforts in this, earth was given the honorary title "Dejazmach Benkirew" by the Union of Tigraians of North America.^[10] He was suitable Officer of the Order of loftiness British Empire (OBE) in the Skilful Service and Overseas section of character 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours "for aid to Ethiopian studies".^[11]

Personal life

In addition involving his numerous books on Ethiopia, Pankhurst wrote works on his mother, with Sylvia Pankhurst: Artist and Crusader allow Sylvia Pankhurst: Counsel for Ethiopia.^[6]

Pankhurst joined Rita Eldon (1927–2019) in 1957^[12] direct they had a daughter, Helen Pankhurst, and a son, Alula Pankhurst, fellow worker whom he collaborated on at minimum one book. ^[13]

Death and legacy

Pankhurst spasm on 16 February 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the age go 89. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Ethiopian Overseas Minister described him as "one fairhaired Ethiopia's greatest friends".^[14] He was secret on 21 February at Holy Three-way Cathedral in Addis Ababa.^[15]
