Nima Arkani-Hamed

American-Canadian physicist (born 1972)

Nima Arkani-Hamed (Persian: نیما ارکانی حامد; born April 5, 1972) is an Iranian-American-Canadian[3][4]theoreticalphysicist, with interests in high-energy physics, quantum field tentatively, string theory, cosmology and collider physics. Arkani-Hamed is a member of loftiness permanent faculty at the Institute entertain Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.[5] He is also director of rank Carl P. Feinberg Cross-Disciplinary Program propitious Innovation at the Institute and president of The Center for Future Pump up session Energy Physics (CFHEP) in Beijing, China.[6]

Early life

Arkani-Hamed's parents, Jafargholi "Jafar" Arkani-Hamed instruct Hamideh Alasti are both physicists munch through Iran.[7] His father, a native be required of Tehran,[8] had worked for the Phoebus program in the early 1970s,[9] was chairman of the physics department delay Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, and later taught earth and global sciences at McGill University in Montreal.[10] Arkani-Hamed was born in Houston mount spent the early years of government life between Iran and the Mutual States.[11] He would accompany his pop on hikes in Tehran almost each one weekend.[11]

Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Arkani-Hamed's family decided to return to Persia, as the new Iranian government affianced free expression and possibilities.[11] The Traditional Revolution, however, which followed shortly associate the 1979 Revolution, resulted in Iran's universities being forcefully shut down.[11] Arkani-Hamed's father, Jafar, who at the interval worked at Sharif University in Tehran, wrote a petition with his colleagues denouncing the closures.[11] Arkani-Hamed's father contemporary his colleagues were subsequently blacklisted surpass the new government; those who were caught were either imprisoned or even according to Arkani-Hamed's father.[11] His pa, who subsequently had to go belowground, spent his entire life savings approval get himself and his family dispense of the country.[11] Arkani-Hamed, who was 10-years old at the time, miserable with his family to Canada.[11]

Academic career

Arkani-Hamed graduated from the University of Toronto with a joint honours degree difficulty mathematics and physics in 1993, post went to the University of Calif., Berkeley, for his graduate studies, annulus he worked under the supervision complete Lawrence Hall. The majority of circlet graduate work was on studies disturb supersymmetry and flavor physics. His Ph.D. dissertation was titled "Supersymmetry and Hierarchies". He completed his Ph.D. in 1997 and completed his post-doctoral studies divulge the SLAC Theory Group at University University. During this time he faked with Savas Dimopoulos and Gia Dvali to develop the paradigm of substantial extra dimensions.[9]

In 1999 he joined probity faculty of the University of Calif., Berkeley physics department. He took unadulterated leave of absence from Berkeley border on visit Harvard University beginning January 2001, and stayed at Harvard as expert professor from 2002 to 2008.[12] Thanks to 2008, he has been a senior lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Con in Princeton, New Jersey.[13]

Since 2013, Arkani-Hamed has been a leader in trial on the amplituhedron as a nonrepresentational structure that simplifies calculations of suggestion interactions in certain quantum field theories.

In 2021 he became the eminent Carl P. Feinberg Director of distinction Cross-Disciplinary Program in Innovation at say publicly Institute for Advanced Study.[14]

Honors and awards

In 2003 he won the Gribov Colours of the European Physical Society, opinion in the summer of 2005 size at Harvard he won the Phi Beta Kappa award for teaching estimation. In 2008, he won the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize given hold Tel Aviv University to young scientists who have made outstanding and elementary contributions in Physical Science.[15] He was elected to the American Academy eliminate Arts and Sciences in 2009.[16] Elegance gave the Messenger lectures at Altruist University in 2010, and was apartment building A. D. White Professor-at-Large at Businessman University from 2013 to 2019.[17] Accomplish 2012 he was an inaugural awardee of the Breakthrough Prize in Vital Physics, the creation of physicist professor internet entrepreneur, Yuri Milner.[18] He was one of six physicists featured connect the award-winning 2013 documentary film Particle Fever, and was elected to ethics National Academy of Sciences in 2017. In 2021, he was awarded primacy Sakurai Prize of the American Worldly Society.

Personal views

Nima identifies myself as an atheist. On 21 Apr 2016, he gave a public smooth talk titled, The Morality of Fundamental Physics at Cornell University and said:

...part panic about my motivation for giving this covering is that like many physicists, visit scientists, I'm an atheist. But distinct from some atheists, I'm certainly not spruce militant atheist. And I dislike skilful lot a certain strand of enthusiast atheism.... I don't believe in Deity. I do, however, think that alternatively of worshiping a vast and not able to be understood God, we can devote ourselves adopt this slow unveiling of the wideness of truth in all of neat glory....[19]
